Jogakbo, Patchwork Wrapping Cloth

60cm x 60cm
양단 Natural dyed silk fabric
Hand-stitch

Memories of Namyangju Mugwort and Gardenia: A Journey to a Museum's Permanent Collection

I remember the days when I was completely captivated by the profound charm of natural dyeing. I used to travel all over to find the perfect raw materials, and I even obtained precious gardenia pods from a relative who personally farmed them. On another beautiful spring day, I headed to a friend’s house in Namyangju to gather wild mugwort that was growing abundantly across the fields. Roaming the fields with my friend and filling our baskets with the fragrant spring mugwort remains a vivid, beautiful memory. At my friend's house, we boiled the freshly gathered mugwort in a large pot; we used the rich green water to dye our fabrics, and we took the remaining boiled mugwort to a local rice mill to make chewy, traditional rice cakes (Jeolpyeon). Sharing those warm rice cakes together became an unforgettable "taste of memory." That experience left such a lasting impression that even now, my friend’s children prefer traditional Korean mugwort rice cakes over any other kind.

The textile art piece—painstakingly hand-stitched using those meticulously sourced gardenia and Namyangju mugwort fabrics—eventually left my hands and became a part of a museum's permanent collection. Exactly 14 years ago, a memorable email arrived in my inbox. It was an official letter from a museum curator, delivering the thrilling news that my Jogakbo (traditional Korean patchwork) artwork was scheduled to be showcased in an official curated exhibition.

At that moment, all the exhaustion from the countless nights I spent holding the needle dissolved like melting snow. Even now, my heart swells with emotion when I think about how a piece carrying the memories of loved ones and the true colors of nature was recognized as a public cultural asset, allowing it to communicate with museum visitors for a long time to come.

💡 Natural Dyeing Tips for Beginners (Gardenia & Mugwort)

For those visiting my blog, I would like to share some simple, traditional natural dyeing methods that you can easily try at home on cotton or silk products.

1. Gardenia Dyeing (Yellow Hues) Gardenia is an excellent natural dye that yields vibrant colors relatively easily, even without a mordant (a substance used to set dyes on fabrics). Simply split the gardenia pods in half, boil them in water to extract the pigment, immerse the pre-washed fabric, and gently massage it. You will achieve a clear, brilliant forsythia-yellow color.

2. Mugwort Dyeing (Green to Khaki Hues) When you place fabric into water boiled with spring mugwort, it initially takes on a very pale, soft light-green tint. At this stage, if you add a small amount of an iron (Fe) mordant, you can stably fix the color into the deep, calm, and lyrical khaki-green that is highly characteristic of traditional Korean tones.

Artist's Note: I would like to define natural dyeing as the ultimate fruit of deep concentration, patient waiting, and rigorous physical labor.
